Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Motorized Shades

Frequently Asked Questions about Smart Window Treatments

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Motorized Shades

Okay, so you’re thinking about upgrading your standard window treatments to motorized shades. You probably have questions! Where do you start? What brand should you choose? Can you set up the shades to open and close automatically?

Our team here at Automated Lifestyles of Texas has installed motorized shades in homes throughout Memorial and the greater Houston area for years, so we know a thing or two about this topic! Below, we cover the most common questions about smart shades so that you can confidently know if this home upgrade is right for you.

What are Motorized Shades?

Let’s start with the basics! Motorized shades (also known as automated or smart shades) are any window treatment that can be controlled remotely through a remote, voice command, motion sensor, etc. They’re part of the Internet of Things – essentially a smart device you can add to a full home automation system.

Why Would I Want Them?

There are tons of reasons to add smart shades to your home. Here are a few of the most popular ones:

  • Save on Energy Bills: Motorized window treatments can be set up to automatically close whenever the room starts heating up too much. These shades help to stop solar heat gain from the hot Texas sun, keeping your home cool and your energy bills low.
  • Protect Home Décor and Furnishings: The sun does more than just heat up your home – it also can damage furnishings. UV rays can bleach or harm fabrics and wood over time, but you can have your shades close automatically to keep sun damage to a minimum during the day.
  • Make Life a Little Easier: Imagine you’re sitting on the couch, reading a novel, when the setting sun hits just the right spot to cause a harsh glare in the room. Do you get up from your comfortable seat to go close the blinds? Instead, you could simply press a button on your smartphone or say “Alexa, close the living room shades.”
  • Improve Home Security: You may not think of window shades as a good home security method, but it’s actually great for when you’re on vacation. Using a “Mockupancy” setting and smart lighting control, you can have the shades and lights mimic the behavior of regular use. So if a thief is casing the neighborhood looking for unoccupied homes, they’ll see shades opening and closing and lights turning on and off just like they would if you were home.

What Brand is Best?

There are several great options for smart lighting and shading. Our go-to brand is Control4, which offers smart solutions for lights, shades, and full home automation systems. But if you have a specific brand in your home already or have a manufacturer preference, such as Lutron, we can definitely accommodate other options too!

When Should I Have Them Installed?

The absolute best time to install motorized window treatments is during construction. The reason for this is because the windows can be designed with the motors in mind – allowing them to be easily hidden away when not in use.

But don’t let that stop you if you want shades for an existing home. Retrofitting motorized shades is very common, so the short answer to the question is “there’s never a bad time!”

How Much Does It Cost?

There are tons of different variables that will affect cost, such as how many window shades you want to upgrade and what you want to do with them. Dual shades or single shades, size of each window, new construction vs. retrofit, and type of material can also affect how much it might cost.

That said, the easiest way to find out how much your shading project will run is to give us a call! We can give you a no-obligation quote based on what you’re hoping to achieve.
